Undernutrition

Undernutrition is when one does not consume enough calories, proteins, minerals or vitamins to ensure proper physical and cognitive growth, it is a public health concern in most of the developing countries.

In Kenyan schools it affects about half of the learning children in various ways ranging from a lack of a proper hot meal, lack of a balanced diet meal, innutritious food and lack of enough food leaving pupils academically impaired.

On 2009 the Kenyan government started the National School Feeding Programme (NSFP) the programme that provides meals to about 5 million pupils nationwide, the programme has improved school enrolment and attendance rates.

Solving undernutrition

However solving the undernutrition problem requires a multi-faced and inclusive approach tailored to the needs of communities.

  • Partnering with local farmers to supply farm produce to schools.
  • Providing nutritional education to schools.
  • Fortifying readily available food in the affected communities and schools.
  • Promoting food security programmes and activities in primary schools.

Poor infrastructure, extreme poverty and climate change are among the contributing factors of undernutrition and that is why we address them through our causes.
